“She’s dead?” Jeremy said in disbelief. He stood in the doorway of his apartment, his eyes filling, his knees wobbling.

"I'm sorry to be the one to tell you," I said.

"How?” He could barely eke out the word.

I gave him limited details.

Jeremy was about 6 feet tall with shaggy brown hair, trimmed close on the sides. He had a slender face and high cheekbones. He wasn't the kind of guy that you'd see on the cover of men's magazines, but I don't think he had a terrible time with the ladies.

Either he was a really good actor, or he didn't kill Sydney. His whole world had ended upon hearing the news. The color drained from his skin, and it misted with a clammy sweat.

I thought he was going to collapse right there. "Are you okay?”

"No. I'm pretty far from okay, man.”

"Why don't you go inside and sit down?”

He nodded, and we followed him down the foyer.

Jack pulled the door shut behind us.

It was a typical college kid's apartment. Cheap but stylish furniture. Mass-market art hung on the walls. The kind of canvases that you could pick up at the same place where you got your couch.

Jeremy fell into a chair and rested his head in his hands.

JD and I scanned the surroundings before taking a seat on the sofa.

"I just have a few standard questions for you," I said. "Can you tell me where you were between 7:00 and 9:00 PM yesterday?”

"I was working," he said without hesitation.

"Where do you work?"

"I wait tables at Land & Sea."

"Nice restaurant.” I paused. “What can you tell me about the breakup between you and Sydney?"

"It's not something I wanted, I can tell you that.”

"Did you get angry?"

"I don't know if I’d call it angry. I was upset, confused, hurt. I thought we were on the same wavelength. I thought we were moving toward something, you know?"

"Did she always go jogging in the evening at the park?"

“Sometimes she’d jog around campus, but she got harassed a lot. You know, random people honking their horns. Dudes hitting on her. I think she liked the park better.”

“It’s dangerous jogging in the park after hours,” I said, stating the obvious. “That place isn't lit, and there aren’t many people around in the evenings."

Jeremy frowned.

"Can you think of anybody who wanted to harm her?"

His face wrinkled like it was the most absurd thing he'd ever heard. "No. Everybody loved Sydney. She was such a kind person," he said, his voice breaking up again. His eyes filled, and he broke down into sobs.

“You didn’t happen to go to the bonfire at Dolphin Beach the other night, did you?”

He shook his head.

“You mind if we take a look around the apartment?" I asked.

Jeremy looked confused. "Yeah, I don't care. But why? What are you looking for?”

"It's standard procedure," I assured. I didn't want to tell him we were looking for a bloody knife, duct tape, and maybe a pair of handcuffs.

Jeremy sat in the chair by the sofa, still in a daze, trying to come to grips with reality.
